About us
Where Passion and Play Unite
We are driven by a common passion, a love for cricket, competition, and the joy of play. Founded with the belief that sports should be accessible and enjoyable for all, we've created a vibrant community where people of diverse backgrounds and abilities come together.
Our journey began with a vision: to provide a space where individuals could explore their potential, build camaraderie, and foster a spirit of teamwork. Over the years, this vision has grown into a thriving reality. From heart-pounding team performances to soul-soothing solo pursuits, we cater to every interest.
Whether you're a seasoned cricketer or just looking to have fun, you'll find a welcoming home here.
We take pride in our team of dedicated volunteers and coaches who share their expertise and passion, helping our members develop their skills and confidence. It's not just about winning; it's about the journey, the friendships forged, and the personal growth that comes with each challenge. But we're not just about the games; we're about giving back to the community that has embraced us. We believe in the power of sports to inspire positive change. Through various outreach programs and partnerships, we aim to make a meaningful impact, both on and off the field. Join us in celebrating the joy of cricket, the thrill of competition, and the unbreakable bonds forged through it.
Our club is more than just a place to play; it's a place to belong.
Welcome to our community, where passion and play unite to create something truly exceptional.
Our History
Sunningwell Cricket Club was first established in 1869.
Sunningwell village lies on the south-western slopes of Boars Hill and was the original site of the Abbey of Abingdon in Saxon times. During the dissolution of the monasteries the abbey was destroyed in 1551 - though the church and manor house (built by Benedictine monks) remained. It was at this manor house that Queen Elizabeth I frequently stayed when collecting monies from her Treasurer (who lived in the neighbourhood).
Our cricket field was presented to the village during the First World War along with a local bylaw that indicates it may only ever be used to play recreational cricket on! The pavilion was erected in 1970?
We play in club colours of green and gold.
Our club objectives are:
- To provide a supportive environment that encourages success and supports participation in the playing of amateur cricket, at junior and senior level, whilst acting as a hub for cricket development within the local community and such other ancillary activities for the benefit of members as the committee may decide.
- To manage, maintain and improve the club ground, buildings and facilities at Sunningwell Cricket Club.
