Please be aware that over the first few weeks of the cricket season there will be disruption on the roads into Sunningwell, including the road that leads to the cricket ground. You may need to allow a little extra time for your journey.

Sunningwell Cricket Club is committed to welcoming new players and social members and to endorse this, we have printed a thousand colour leaflets.

Obviously, we need to get the leaflets to the people of the surrounding villages and towns in order to create awareness of our club and this is where we need your help!

We're planning a group drop - so watch out for details of this - where other members will co-ordinate and post the leaflets around Abingdon's houses and new-build estates - come an be a part of this and help spread the word! Details and dates to follow.

New Joiners

On the 25th October 2025, over 35 men, women and children gathered at the White Horse restaurant and pub, Abingdon for an evening of food, fun and award presentations, superbly organised and hosted by our chairman, Kevin Stacey.

With 15 trophies and awards to be handed out, many were to go home empty handed but filled with collective joy and pride at a season that must be considered a success on all fronts.

The First XI not only won most of their matches this year, but secured promotion at the first time of asking. This was due in no small part to captain Pete Whinfrey, but with consistent performances from key players this season: Sunny Singh on debut, son Rhys Whinfrey, Adam Duffield - the demon bowler. But more than these performances were those who supported them by applying pressure in the field, keeping bowling tight and adding crucial runs. There players (to name but a few) were Jon Waugh, Richard (Prof) Smith, Ranjot Singh and wicket keeper Gareth Piaggesi.

Despite being one of the stronger teams in their league, the Second XI narrowly missed out on promotion this season, finishing fourth. After many, many years of skippering the team, Andrew Barrett moved to focus on his game allowing Hari Perumal to step in. The new approach was embraced by new players in their debut season: Charry Singh who started with a couple of 70+ scores and Ankuj Arora who picked up a 5-wicket haul in his first match for the club!

Notable supporting roles to the success this season were Richard 'Prof' Smith who bounced between the firsts and seconds, Jon Smith (no relation!) with the bat; Ollie Gamble's glove work was sound behind the stumps taking 5 catches in a single game and the steady and effective bowling of Sanjay Kumar, Iain Kyffin, Ethan Garrard and the retiring Simon Steer who has now been put out to pasture in the wilds of Scotland.

But special shout outs must go to our top allrounder Andrew Claydon, the ever-youthful Thomas Libu and newcomer Ritik Midha.

The most exciting of all awards were for those awarded to Jay Kapadia who broke into adult cricket with tremendous effect - not only scoring half-centuries, but also taking wickets. Equally, it's tremendously rewarding to see players coming through the year groups and Jon Waugh is a real gem. His bowling is becoming consistently penetrative and this season saw him score a half century in the cup too!

But the biggest and most special award was the one that was actually meant for Andy Howe (having collected several on behalf of non-attendees). Andy is the spearhead for driving the plans forwards on the new pavilion design, all of which needs money to fuel - so his 24 Hours of Cricket event, coupled with the inaugural Villagers Game are likely to become an annual event going forwards - great legacy, Andy!

2025 Awards Evening

2026 will see a few changes at the club in the way that we operate, but hopefully not in the way that we meet and enjoy the game of cricket. Below are some things to look out for.

Pre-season nets start on Tuesday January 13th at 8.05pm and will repeat every Tuesday until the final session on March 24th. The venue for this training is Cothill Day &amp; Boarding Prep School, Cothill, Abingdon. To join a session, all you need to do is ensure you're on the Spond invitation and show your availability there. This system is also used to generate the payment of £4 for each session, once you've attended. If you don't have access to this group on Spond contact Jon: sunningwellcricket@gmail.com. Cost: £5 adults, £3.50 junior /student/ unemployed.

Before any of us can bowl a ball, the pitch and grounds need tons of work - so we need your help. There are literally hundreds of jobs that need to be done to open up the pavilion, prepare the pitches and outfield, trim back the hedges and ensure the drainage of the whole area isn't blocked! Any amount of time you can spare will be brilliant - some come down for an hour or two and help out!

We'll all be a little rusty after the winter - so this a chance to dust off the cobwebs and get into the swing of feeling bat on ball...or working on that out-swinging delivery! Check Spond to ensure you secure your place in a team for a little fun as well as to prepare for the season. Sunningwell Cricket Club is the heart of the village of Sunningwell, Oxfordshire where traditions and history meet the modern world of cricket.

We welcome new players - whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner - come and join in the fun.

NOVEMBER 21	Stumps Quiz Night - to mark the end of the season a fun quiz night that covers all aspects of cricket as well as other topics. Come along to play and test your grey matter.
